Melody's Key Book Review
I’ve just finished reading Melody’s Key. It was quite an interesting read, and a little outside my usual pick, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
The story centers around Tegan Lockwood. When Tegan was an infant, her parents took out a massive loan to renovate an old family estate in the English countryside. They fixed up the mansion and its grounds, and turned it into a countryside resort. They’ve been struggling financially for as long as Tegan can remember, doling out their massive property tax and paying back their loans. Tourists only come during the summer, and her family struggles to make ends meet the rest of the year. Because of this, Tegan turned down a scholarship to college, knowing that her family could not afford it. It still kills her every day, but she’s determined not to let her parents feel bad about it.
However, when they find out that mega pop star Mason Keane is staying at their resort, her family is beyond excited. All except Tegan. She’s heard the stories about him in the media, and she knows that he is an obnoxious brat who has no musical talent.
Mason Keane arrives at the Lockwood estate trying to find some meaning in his life. He’s beyond depressed, and has lost all motivation to create the music that he once did. Mason’s revelations of all the pressures and troubles he’s faced in the music industry are a shocking blow to Tegan—and the reader.
For me, Mason’s story was shocking. I’ve often felt like Tegan when I look up at pop stars, and hearing Mason’s side of the story showed me a whole new side to music that I never even knew existed. This was definitely my favorite part of the story and the biggest takeaway—other than the fact that I’m not the only person who loves mint chocolate chip ice cream for its aesthetic qualities :)
